This list of projects were undertaken between 2010 -2015 by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. There is a high number of projects with undeclared amounts which makes it very difficult to ascertain if the projects were value for money.

Infrastructure & Trade


Project Title: Emali-Oloitokitok Road Project

Project Description:


"The Works to be executed under the Contract comprise the construction of approximately 101 km of single carriageway, two lane, bitumen surfaced road between Emali and Oloitokitok (including the Oloitokitok loop) and rehabilitation of the 12 km section between oloitokitok and the border with Tanzania. The major items of Works to be executed under the Contract include the following:


1) Provision of offices, laboratory and housing accommodation for the Resident Engineer and his staff.


2) Site clearance, setting out and taking cross sections.


3) Removal and replacement of top soil and expansive clays.


4) Construction of earthworks.


5) Operation in quarries and borrow areas.


6) Diversion of services required.


7) Maintenance of existing road during the construction period.


8) Management and control of traffic of traffic passing through or around the works.


9) Gravelling of detours, deviations, junctions and accesses, when so instructed.


10)  Construction of approximately 30 lines of pipe culverts and soil erosion protection works.


11) Construction of some 31 No. box culverts and 4 No. bridges of 20 to 60 m spans.


12) Construction of app. 101km of pavement layers generally comprising:


               a) 175mm thick cement improved gravel sub-base


               b) 150mm thick graded crushed stone base layer


               c) Wearing course comprising 50mm asphalt concrete and 10/14 mm pre-coated chippings, and


               d) Single seal surface treatment comprising 10/14 mm chippings and a slurry seal on the shoulders.


13) Rehabilitation of the 12 km section between Oloitokitok and the border with Tanzania.


14) Provision and erection of road furniture including road signs, road markings, edge marker posts, guardrails and other miscellaneous works.


15) Maintenance of the works during the construction period.


16) Rectification of defects affecting the completed road for a period of 24 months.


The construction of Emali- Oloitokitok road will not only facilitate transport and communication in both Kajiado and Oloitokitok districts but will also enhance the drainage system in these areas. The accompanying multiplier effect will increase the income levels of the locals and this will lead to better standards of living.


Project Title: Reconstruction of Multinational Arusha - Namanga Athi River Road Lot K: Athi River - Namanga Section

Project Description:


The works consists of the reconstruction of the existing bitumen surfaced road to an international trunk road standard with a 7 m wide shoulders on each side for a total length of 136 km. The project includes 5.5 km of service roads within the towns of Athi River, Kitengela, Isinya, Ilbissis and Namanga. The works also include:


1. Construction of junctions, accesses, bus lay byes.


2. Provision and erection of road furniture including road markings.


3. Six new bridges, eight new box culverts, extending nine existing box culverts and the construction of pipe culverts, drainage and all other works or things herein required to be done or which may be ordered by the Engineer under the provision of the Contract.


The reconstruction of this road is expected to increase the income levels of locals and improve the drainage system in the areas concerned.

Border post and Roadside Socio-Economic Infrastructure -involves the construction and equipment of two Road Stations in Marsabit and Turbi, the construction of One-stop-Border-Post facilities in Moyale, the construction and equipping of security outposts, the construction and equipment of a weighbridge station, and the drilling of community water boreholes and water harvesting schemes.

The project aims to enhance the social and economic development of the North-Eastern Region of the country, reduce the vehicle operating cost and facilitate the transport of goods and passengers to and from the neighbouring countries.


Project Title: Timboroa - Eldoret Road Project

Project Title: Northern Corridor Rehabilitation Programme - Phase III (Eldoret-Webuye-Malaba)

Rehabilitation of Eldoret - Webuye (59Km) and Webuye - Malaba Road (61Km) Projects. Widening the shoulders from the current 1.5m to 2.0m. Reconstruction of seriously deteriorated sections. In other sections, DBM and AC overlays to enhance the pavement strength. Construction of 2 New Bridges in Webuye - Malaba section (at Malakisi River Crossing and Malaba River Crossing).


1. To rehabilitate the road to maintainable conditions with a technical life extended by 15 years.


2. To contribute/spur the economic growth and improvement of living standards in Kenya and in the neighbouring landlocked countries through a sustainable and safe national road network of which the Northern Corridor is the backbone.


Project Title: Sugar Reforms Support Project (Annual Action Programme 2009 under the Accompanying Measures for Sugar Protocol Countries)

This project contributes to implementation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency's (JICA) financed "Study for the Master Plan for Urban Transport in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area (2006-2025)", adopted by the Government of Kenya.            


Overall objective: Support to transport infrastructure sector is to attain a sustainable, safe roads network that facilitates economic growth, employment and the improvement in socio-economic living standards.


Specific objective: To contribute to the implementation of the master plan for urban transport in the Nairobi metropolitan area (2006-2025) and thereby improve traffic operations and traffic management within Nairobi city and its outskirts.


Project Title: Improving Access in Kenya's National Parks (Bridge over the Galana River)

The Roads 2000 Phase Two Project entails the following components;


Component 1- Physical works

Upgrading of 1083 km of roads in Kiambu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Laikipia regions; low-cost sealing road rehabilitation of 106km of well-trafficked roads and routine maintenance of 5,057 km of fair and good roads in the six Regions


Component 2 - Management Support


Strengthening of KeRRA and establishing an efficient system of road maintenance in the six Regions. The support will be provided by the Management Support Team.


Component 3 – This component will involve training and capacity building of private contractors.

Project Title: Nairobi Outer Ring Road Improvement Project

The project has five components namely:


- Road construction Civil works which involves improvement of the existing 13 km single carriageway road to a 2- lane dual carriageway complete with service roads, pedestrian foot-over-bridges, walkways and complementary works such as planting of 4,500 tree, market stalls and wellness centres for HIV/AIDs and related illnesses.


- Consultancy services for design reviewing and supervision of civil works; development of urban roads maintenance strategy and technical auditing services


- The Traffic management technical assistance (TA) in order to improve the efficiency of the entire transport system.


- Training of at least 500 youths currently working in the informal sector within the transport corridor and have no formal training. The Youths will be trained as artisans to enable them secure gainful employment thereafter.


- Compensation and resettlement of the affected persons identified in the project Environmental and social impact Assessment.


The objective of this project is to improve the existing Outer ring Road in the City of Nairobi into a dual carriageway in order to expand its traffic carrying capacity to ease traffic congestion and in turn enhance economic efficiency through improved mobility and accessibility to business.

To contribute to a return to normalcy of services at JKIA by construction of an interim terminal.
